What happens when I join a new team?

Joining a team makes it easier to collaborate with others in projects and mind maps.

However, when you switch to a new team, the ownership of your existing projects, notes and mind maps may change.

What exactly happens depends on

  • Your previous way of working: Were you working alone or part of a larger team?
  • The type of content (e.g. projects, mind maps) that you have created or has been shared with you.
  • The plan your new team is on: Basic plan vs. Pro and Business plan

Below you will find details on how the individual types of content are affected.

Projects in MeisterTask

If you have created your own projects in MeisterTask or are part of somebody else’s projects, ownership and access rights may change.

If you have previously worked alone and are joining a new team:

  • All projects that you have created will be transferred to the new team. You can continue to access the projects as normal.
  • You lose ownership of your projects: Ownership of all your projects is automatically transferred to the new team. Find out more about project ownership here.
  • You can share your Private and Team Projects with other team members at any time.
  • You can assign the Content Manager project role to other project members from your team so that these users can also manage the projects.
  • Your Private Projects remain private. Other team members will not have access to your Private Projects unless you explicitly invite them or share the project with them.
  • New team members automatically gain access to Team Projects. Any project set as a Team Project will appear in the left sidebar for all new team members.

If you are already part of a team and are moving to a new team:

  • The projects you have created will not be transferred to the new team. The old team keeps all the projects you have created.
  • You will lose access to all projects you created when working with the old team.
  • All projects created by users outside your old and new team (a third party) to which you have been invited will remain accessible.

Overview of access rights in projects

The following table shows whether you retain or lose access to a project.

The table describes access rights based on the following conditions:

  • Your old team or license was on the Basic plan,
  • and your new team, which has at least two team members, also has a Basic subscription.
Projects you have created Projects that have been shared with your email address
Previously worked alone

You retain access.

Please note, however, that the entire team can only have access to the same 3 oldest projects. If your project is younger than the 3 oldest projects, it will become read-only and appear inactive in the left sidebar.

Private projects also count towards the 3-project limit. The new team members have no access to Private Projects. If the Private Project is not one of the three oldest projects, then it will be read-only.

You retain access.
Have previously worked in a team (=at least 2 team members) You lose access.

You lose access to projects that belong to your old team.

You retain access to projects that belong to a 3rd party (projects that don’t belong to the old or new team).

Mind maps in MindMeister

If you have already created mind maps in MindMeister or have been invited to mind maps by others, the ownership or possibly your access rights will change.

If you have previously worked alone and are joining a new team:

  • All mind maps that you have created will be transferred to the new team. You can continue to access the mind maps as normal.
  • You lose ownership of your mind maps: Ownership of all your mind maps is automatically transferred to the new team. Find out more about who owns mind maps.
  • You can share your Private and Team Mind maps with other team members or users outside your team at any time.
  • New team members automatically gain access to Team mind maps. Any mind map set as a Team Map will appear in the Team map section, visible for all new team members.

If you are already part of a team and are moving to a new team or leaving your team:

  • You lose access to all the mind maps you have created.
  • All mind maps that you have created will not be transferred to the new team. The old team keeps all the mind maps you have created.
  • The Team Admin of the old team is given access to all mind maps that you have created. The Team Admin can now see and manage these mind maps.
  • All new mind maps that you create from now on belong to the new team.
